This movie is very visually appealing, but for some reason I don't think they carried a consistant tone throughout the movie. The exposition is weak, which I can forgive in a survival horror story; however, I think the acting was dreadful from most of the actors playing humans.

It did have a few nice touches other than the photography. I thought the sound design was excellent. The act of what can only be thought of as compassion by the lead vampire was a nice touch as well.

Worth checking out on video if you're bored.

I remember seeing this movie when I was a teenager, pre George W. Bush and September 11. Back when Micheal Moore was some guy who made a documentary about how pissed off he was with what was happening to his home town and his quest to speak to the president of the company that he felt abandoned them.

In that context, I remember thinking that Canadian Bacon was a decent comedy. Made me chuckle at least, and I enjoyed it's absurd humor at times.

Now however, post Sept 11, post shock and awe, in the midst of terrorist fever, I watched this movie in a different light. If you watch this movie, you can see indicators of all of Moore's current themes in his documentaries.

The idea of staging a war to boost opinion polls and get people to forget about the US's debt and sagging economy doesn't seem to that far fetched. Watching this movie now, it's a lot easier for me to see it as the satire it was meant to be, something I couldn't do when Clinton was in office.

As a bonus, John Candy is always hilarious.

To me, the core idea of this movie is the absurdity of violence. There's no point to any of it beyond people deceiving their selves or being deceived and manipulated by others. That's the only message I can get from this film; although, it's also good for a laugh if you've got a very black sense of humor.
